Common Issues Participants May Face
Use this FAQ when a participant reports a problem. Each item includes the issue as they may describe it and the recommended next step.
I'm not receiving notifications from Fabla, even though notification permissions are turned on. (Android)
Solution
Battery Saver mode on Android restricts background activity, which blocks the app from sending notifications even when permissions are correctly enabled.
Confirm the participant does not have Battery Saver mode turned on. If it's on, turn it off (or disable battery optimization specifically for Fabla) and confirm notifications resume.
The survey page won't load and shows a red error screen (Page Not Found)
Solution
The phone may be offline, and survey submission requires internet connectivity. If the participant has no way to get back online, advise them to skip the survey and proceed with the diary.
I do not know what my study string is, or my study string is incorrect
Solution
Instruct the participant to enter their provided alphanumeric code for Fabla, not the participant ID, on the first screen when they open Fabla.
The diary failed to submit. A screen saying "Oops, something went wrong" may appear
Solution
If there is a lapse in connectivity, the diary will fail to upload to the server. This will not result in data loss. Instruct the participant to upload the diary the next time they have a steady internet connection. Multiple diaries can be uploaded in bulk after a period of being offline.
I reinstalled Fabla on a new or different phone and can't see my past entries in History anymore
Solution
Reinstalling the app clears the local History tab on that device.
No action needed — past submissions are already saved with the study team. The participant can resume normally from their next scheduled entry.
